It’s In the Cards
The use of playing cards can be traced in Europe as early as 1377. The tarot card deck (usually 78 cards) began as a variety of European card games in the mid 15th century (such as tarocchini in Italy). By the late 1700s, the tarot was used as a divination tool by mystics.
In recent years, many kinds of oracle cards have emerged. They range greatly, some modelled on the tarot, while others are styled in a modern way. They may be motivational, healing, philosophical, or even about business. They may have angel, fairy or tribal themes.

The Minor Arcana
The tarot has four suits which correspond to traditional card decks: Swords (spades), Wands or Rods (clubs), Cups (hearts) and Pentacles (diamonds). It has 14 cards numbered from ace to ten and four court cards representing Page (Jack), Knight, Queen, and King.
The Major Arcana
In addition, the tarot deck has 22 special cards without suits that represent unique meanings. These include: The Fool, The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress, The Emperor, The Hierophant, The Lovers, The Chariot, Strength, The Hermit, Wheel of Fortune, Justice, The Hanged Man, Death, Temperance, The Devil, The Tower, The Star, The Moon, The Sun, Judgement, and The World.
Card Layouts
Celtic Cross
The Celtic Cross tarot card layout is probably the most common layout. It involves a spread of 10 cards. Although this may vary from reader to reader, the cards generally represent: the current situation, what crosses it (challenges), what has already been experienced with regard to this matter, the best outcome for this situation, the past, the immediate future, your view on the situation, how others see the situation, your hopes and fears, and the outcome. Payment is £60 (or $120 USD/CAD).
3 Card Spread
The 3 card spread is common for a quick reading, when a specific question is asked. It represents past, present and future. Payment is £30 (or $60 USD/CAD).
1 Card Pull
Sometimes, all you need for a focused answer to a specific question is a single card reading. Payment is £20 (or $35 USD/CAD).
Interpretation
While the tarot (and most oracle cards) have defined interpretations, they should be used as a guide. The reader uses his or her intuition to tune in on issues that speak out of the card layout. The intuitive sees or notices things in an individual reading, that he/she may not see every time that card is pulled. All cards also relate to and depend on each other for their interpretation.
